Iceland became a member of GBIF in June 2001.
Global Biodiversity Information Facility has the mission to make the world's primary data on biodiversity freely and universally available via the Internet.

In 2001 the Ministry for the Environment and the Icelandic Institute of Natural History published a National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity called: Biological Diversity in Iceland.
